Established in 1925 as the Prince of Wales Medical College, Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH) is one of the oldest and most historic medical institutions in Asia. Located on the banks of the Ganges in Patna, Bihar, it evolved from the Temple Medical School (founded in 1874) and celebrated its centenary in February 2025, an event marked by a visit from President Droupadi Murmu. Affiliated with the Bihar University of Health Sciences, the college admits 200 MBBS students annually and offers over 150 postgraduate seats across various specialties.
The institution is currently undergoing a massive ₹5,540-crore redevelopment to transform it into one of the world’s largest healthcare facilities, with a planned capacity of 5,462 beds and 36 super-specialty departments. Even in its current state, the hospital serves as the primary tertiary care center for Bihar.
