Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research

The Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER), located in Puducherry, is one of India’s most elite medical institutions and holds the status of an Institute of National Importance (INI). Its history dates back to 1823 when it was established by the French as the École de Médicine de Pondichéry, making it one of the oldest medical schools in Asia.

JIPMER is renowned for its world-class academic programs, admitting students through the NEET (for MBBS) and INI-CET (for PG) exams, and it manages a massive tertiary care hospital with over 2,000 beds that provides high-quality, free-of-cost specialty care to thousands of patients daily.

5.5-year MBBS course, which includes 4.5 years of academic study followed by a mandatory 1-year rotating internship.

JIPMER Puducherry MBBS admission is through NEET-UG, followed by MCC counselling for seat allotment, requiring a 12th pass with PCB (50% aggregate, 45% for reserved categories) and an age of 17+. Candidates must qualify NEET-UG, aim for high scores (around 680+ for General), and participate in centralized counselling, as JIPMER no longer conducts its own separate entrance exam but uses NEET scores for its seats.
